Today, we are going to learn ‘Enclosure’.

It’s a common technique in jazz and gypsy jazz, bossa nova. To be honest , I didn’t even know this technique had a name till few years ago.

It’s kind of ‘cliche’ because it is a common technique in gypsy jazz style of solo . But if you are new to this kind of music, then you have never heard or used this.

Anyway , let’s have a look what this is!

Enclosure Key-G

I’ll show you enclosure for major , minor ,dominant chords.

Major key

key G enclosure

Basically , this picture tells you everything.

Red circles are the target notes which are chord notes, 1-3-5 degree , and they are approached by a whole step above and a half step below except 3rd degree note.

As you can see that when you play B which is 3rd degree of scale, you play  half step above and below.

Minor key

When you play Dorian scale then you play this one.

enclosure minor key

This is Aeolian scale

Dominant chord

Usually, you can use major enclosure for dominant chord but there are some more as well.

This is a Basic one.

ドミナントコード・7thコード エンクロージャー

Next is without root note.

Last one is when the key is minor and the chord progression is dominant chord to minor chord.

How to use them? you can just add those licks into your solo. No rules.

as example, I used those enclosure in the lesson for Bossa Dorado improvisation lesson. It’s from 1min 36sec.

Also there are lot of enclosure in Django’s tiger. Please check it out !

Conclusion

You can use the licks you learnt today in your solos. Just have to change the keys.

Also , to be able to use ‘Enclosure’ , you should know the scales and chord tones. Chord tones are the target notes and approached by scale notes.
