{"id":241,"date":"2019-07-17T06:25:17","date_gmt":"2019-07-16T21:25:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.gipsyjazznyumon.com\/en\/?p=241"},"modified":"2020-06-21T20:02:13","modified_gmt":"2020-06-21T11:02:13","slug":"minor-scales-and-arpeggios-lesson","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/manouche-jazz-lessons.com\/en\/minor-scales-and-arpeggios-lesson\/","title":{"rendered":"Minor scales and arpeggios lesson"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In this lesson , we are going to learn Minor scales and Arpeggios.<\/p>\n<p>Gypsy jazz songs in minor keys is easier to make solo gypsy-jazzy and it&#8217;s a lot of fun to improvise.<\/p>\n<p>Before going to the lesson, I will show you common scales and names which I already told you in the previous lesson <a href=\"https:\/\/manouche-jazz-lessons.com\/en\/major-scales-and-arpeggios-lesson\/\">&#8216;Major scales and arpeggios&#8217;<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>scale names<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ionian scale\u30fb\u30fb\u30fb1 2 3 4 5 6 7 (so called &#8216;Major scale&#8217;)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dorian scale\u30fb\u30fb\u30fb1 2 b3 4 5 6 b7\uff08so called &#8216; Minor scale&#8217;\uff09<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Aeolian scale\u30fb\u30fb\u30fb1 2 b3 4 5 b6 b7\uff08So called &#8216; Minor scale&#8217;\uff09<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mixolydian scale\u30fb\u30fb\u30fb1 2 3 4 5 6 b7\uff08so called &#8216;Dominant scale&#8217;\uff09<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Phrigian scale\u30fb\u30fb\u30fb1 b2 b3 4 5 b6 b7<\/p>\n<p>Lydian scale\u30fb\u30fb\u30fb1 2 3 #4 5 6 7<\/p>\n<p>Locrian scale\u30fb\u30fb\u30fb1 b2 b3 4 b5 b6 b7<\/p>\n<p>If you haven&#8217;t taken the lesson &#8216; <a href=\"https:\/\/manouche-jazz-lessons.com\/en\/major-scales-and-arpeggios-lesson\/\">Major scales and arpeggio<\/a> &#8216; and &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/manouche-jazz-lessons.com\/en\/7th-chord-arpeggios-and-scales\/\">7th chord scales and arpeggios<\/a>&#8216;, have a look at them as well!!<\/p>\n<h2>What is a scale?<\/h2>\n<p>In music theory , a scale is set of musical notes ordered by fundamental frequency or pitch.<\/p>\n<p>For example , C major scale has no # or b.<\/p>\n<p>C , D , E , F , G , A , B<\/p>\n<p>This is called<span class=\"marker\"> Ionian scale <\/span>which we learnt in the previous lesson.<\/p>\n<p>What about minor scale?<\/p>\n<p>C D Eb F G A Bb\uff08Dorian\uff09<\/p>\n<p>C D Eb F G Ab Bb\uff08Aeolian\uff09<\/p>\n<p>C D Eb F G Ab B (Harmonic minor)<\/p>\n<p>C D Eb F G A B\uff08Melodic minor\uff09<\/p>\n<p>C D Eb F# G Ab B (Hungarian scale)<\/p>\n<h2>Minor Scale<\/h2>\n<p>To be honest, there are lot more scales out there but if you know these 5 scales , you can do lots of things.<\/p>\n<h3>Dorian scale<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-247\" src=\"https:\/\/manouche-jazz-lessons.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Dorian-scale-min.png\" alt=\"Dorian scale\" width=\"1019\" height=\"121\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Dorian is often used in gypsy jazz because we use m6 chords often and this 6 is not b6 , so this gives you very nice melody.<\/p>\n<h3>Aeolian scale<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-246\" src=\"https:\/\/manouche-jazz-lessons.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Aeolian-scale-min.png\" alt=\"Aeolian scale\" width=\"1020\" height=\"120\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I guess you hear this scale often.<\/p>\n<h3>Harmonic minor scale<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-248\" src=\"https:\/\/manouche-jazz-lessons.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/harmonic-minor-scale-min.png\" alt=\"harmonic minor scale\" width=\"1020\" height=\"123\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This scale has maj7 means 7th chord is not flat and this fits in gypsy styles of music.<\/p>\n<h3>Melodic minor scale<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-250\" src=\"https:\/\/manouche-jazz-lessons.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/melodic-minor-scale-min.png\" alt=\"melodic minor scale\" width=\"1040\" height=\"134\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Hungarian minor scale<\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-249\" src=\"https:\/\/manouche-jazz-lessons.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/hungarian-minor-scale-min.png\" alt=\"hungarian minor scale\" width=\"1041\" height=\"131\" \/><\/p>\n<p>People often think this is gypsy jazz scale and it&#8217;s not true but it fits very good.
